The New Ram HD

2019 Ram HD Trucks: A Complete Redesign Brings About a New Generation of Heavy-Duty Trucks

Strength, power, capability, and durability have always been the defining trait of heavy-duty Ram trucks. When hard work needs to get done, drivers from Plymouth to West Bloomfield turn to the venerated Ram 2500 and Ram 3500.

While Ram trucks have always delivered on their promise for robust capability, the newly introduced 2019 Ram HD 2500 and 3500 models are sure to up the ante. Fully redesigned inside and out, these trucks elevate expectations for towing, payload, and more. Even interior comfort and ergonomics have been rehashed for a better driving experience. In total, the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty represents a comprehensive overhaul for Ram's brawnier pickups.

Body and Chassis Redesigned from the Ground Up

Peel back the sheet metal and you'll see changes to the frame and chassis as well. New models will come with a revamped ladder frame that uses high strength steel for both weight reduction and strength improvement. Ram has fitted the new frame with Active-Tuned Mass Modules that are designed to reduce vibrations at speed.

Suspension features will depend largely on whether you choose a Ram 2500 or Ram 3500. The Ram 2500 offers rear coil springs while the Ram 3500 offers rear coil springs. Optional air coil springs can improve ride quality in the 2500, while the 3500 can get an available airbag suspension setup.

Engines Lineup

Important developments have occurred underneath the hood, with two new engine options available.

Ram has ditched the old model's 5.7-liter HEMI V8 in favor of a new, more powerful 6.4-liter HEMI V8. This engine ups power to 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. Choose the V8, and you'll get a standard eight-speed automatic ZF transmission.

The truly exciting news comes with the re-tuned 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline-six engine. Long lauded for its earth-shaking torque, the reworked engine now offers even more power. You can now coax up to 1000 pound-feet of torque from the Cummins power plant. That means that Ram HD is better equipped than ever for burdensome towing tasks.

Towing Options and Capability

With the right combination of features, you can get a Ram HD truck that's ready to tackle your toughest towing demands. The 2019 Ram 2500 tops out at 19,780, while the Ram 3500 moves up to a 35,100-pound towing capacity. Both the Ram 3500 and Ram 2500 can be equipped for gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing as well.

Other features aim to make towing easier. In particular, the Max Tow package equips your truck with a trailer-brake controller, cargo-view camera, dual rear wheels, a larger axle, and more.

Off-Road Features

All 2019 Ram HD models offer available four-wheel drive. However, some are better suited for off-road use than others. In particular, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon is outfitted for all sorts all-terrain activities. With the Power Wagon, you'll get disconnect anti-roll bar, factory suspension lift, locking front and rear differentials, and a standard winch.

Interior Trappings

The 2019 Ram HD lineup doesn't just ensure you'll get the job done -- it gives you a cabin to keep you comfortable along the way. While the Tradesman trim sticks to a basic work-truck approach, higher trim levels offer a full-on luxury experience. Full 100% leather seats, high definition harman/kardon audio, a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and other optional features anchor the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 in modern refinement.

Technology Features

Gone are the days when trucks offered bare-bones features. Now, you can get your Ram HD truck with technology to keep you connected. New 2019 Models offer a standard five-inch screen with basic functionality. In the middle is a 8.4-inch touchscreen. But the big news is the available 12-inch touchscreen. This horizontal display occupies the center stack, allowing you to navigate a wide range of features with ease.

The interface working within these screens is the famous Uconnect system. Uconnect allows for hands-free calling, navigation, mobile app access, and much more. You can even operate your smartphone apps via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
